Pilgrim’s Hike to Wat Phalad and Doi Suthep Temple

Sign up or log in to save this to your schedule and see who's attending!

We will meet at 9:45am on the South side of Chiang Mai University on Suthep Rd before it turns into Suthep Alley to group up before beginning our hike. We will be leaving shortly after that, so please be on time if you want to start with the group.

Please note that as the nature of a hike excursion in a large group, people tend to go at differing paces and the group tends to spread out. If you want to be sure to link up with certain people throughout the excursion, we recommend making plans in advance to do so.

The hike begins with a walk along the road to the start of the Pilgrim's hike trail head, which can take anywhere from 30-45 minutes, followed by another 30-45 minutes to the first temple, Wat Phalad. This section of the hike winds through a dense tropical forest, crossing a small, clear creek several times. It is a moderate level of difficulty.

Wat Phalad is a quiet, serene and utterly breathtaking temple full of mystery at every turn. If you are looking for a shorter hike, it is recommended you turn around here and head back down the moutain.

If, however, you are looking for something a little more rigorous, join us on the continuation of the hike up to Doi Suthep Temple. This section of the hike is steep and grueling, taking about an hour more to get to the top. As people tend to finsih at their own pace, we recommend partnering up with someone to hike before reaching the top if you want to explore the temples with them as well.

Doi Suthep Temple is a few more minutes up the road from where the trail ends and costs about $1 to enter. If you plan on doing so, please be sure to bring the required attire with you (shoulders covered, long pants). After relaxing at Doi Sutthep, feel free to either group together for a songtao back down the mountain or return to the trail and hike back down. The hike back down takes about an hour. There will be no official group plans for the return trip, so feel free to return however feels best for you.

What to Bring
Comfortable hiking footwear (Several have hiked this in bare feet, but this is NOT recommended if you don’t have much bare foot experience).
Appropriate clothing if you plan on entering temples (no bare shoulders or legs)
